John S. Henderson was born to parents Kinley K. Henderson and Louise F. Henderson in 1945. He received his Ph.D. from Yale University in 1974. Dr. Henderson is now a Professor of Anthropology at Cornell University, where he has taught both anthropology and archaeology since the seventies. He also served as Director of the Cornell Archaeology Program since 1990. Dr. Henderson had 25 seasons of experience focusing mainly in Mexico and Central America. He has also conducted field work in the United States, Peru, Cyprus, and Turkey. He was also the designer of the archaeology section of the Museum of Anthropology and History in San Pedro Sula, Honduras. He directed a research project in the lower Ulœa river valley in 1979. His most recent excavations have been the uncovering one of the earliest pottery-making villages in Mesoamerica along with evidence that shortly thereafter the area became part of Mesoamerica’s first civilization, the Olmec. One of Dr. Henderson’s books, The World of the Ancient Maya, is considered by many to be the best introduction to ancient Maya civilization available.
