In 1975 Reeves studied at the University College in London and received a First Class Honors Bachelor's Degree in Ancient History. In 1980 he began graduate study at the University of Durham and obtained his Ph.D. in Egyptology with a special focus on tomb robbery. In 1978 he was awarded the Douglas Murray Scholarship in Egyptian Archeology for the fieldwork he did at KV55. In 1979 and 1980 he was awarded the Flinders Petrie Scholarship in Egyptian Archeology for his work at Quseir el-Amarna, and in 1983 he was granted the ad hoc award from the University of Oxford Wainwright Fund for his research on the tomb of Tutankhamun. Reeves is currently Director of the Amarna Royal Tombs Project, and previously excavated with the Egypt Exploration Society at the Anubieion, Saqqara, at Ashmenein with the British Museum, and with the Japanese in the tomb of Amenophis III.
Nicholas Reeves has published several books and catalogues which he has either been authored, co-authored, edited, or contributor to. Some of the books that he has written are Valley of the Kings: The Decline of a Royal Necropolis, The Complete Tutankhamun, Howard Carter: Before Tutankhamun, Ancient Egypt: The Great Discoveries, and Akhenaten: Egypt's False Prophet. In addition to these, he also co-authored a children's book called Into the Mummy's Tomb: The real-life discovery of Tutankhamun's Treasures. This book has won him various awards such as the School Library Journal Best Book of the Year for 1992, the ALA Best Book for the Reluctant Young Adult Reader, and Winner of the Garden State Teen Book Award for 1995.
