Richard Wilkinson is a trained Egyptologist and is Director of the University of Arizona Egyptian expedition, which is conducting several archeological projects in Egypt's famed Valley of the Kings. Particularly interested in Egyptian symbolism, he is the author of six books and over sixty articles, many of which deal with this subject.  His more famous books included Reading Egyptian Art: A Hieroglyphic Guide to Ancient Egyptian Painting and Sculpture (1992), Symbol and Magic in Egyptian Art (1994), Valley of the Sun Kings: New Explorations in the Tombs of the Pharaohs (1995), and The Complete Valley of the Kings (1996). He also edits the Annual Directory of North American Egyptologists.

Professor Wilkinson served for ten years as Director of the Arizona Chapter of the American Research Center in Egypt, the official Egyptological Association of the United States, and for two terms as a member of the organization’s national Board of Directors. Since 1988 he has been at the University of Arizona where he teaches classes in Egyptian archeology culture and language.  His research in Egypt has included excavation in and around a number of tombs in the Valley of the Kings and his team of scholars and students is currently preparing the first computerized study of one of these royal tombs. His excavations are ongoing.
