Oceans

Satellite Image of World

Evoking images of boundless beauty and fierce majesty, the vast bodies of water surrounding the continents have influenced mankind for time immemorial. From the first brave souls who ventured out into the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean to the deep sea explorers of today, the oceans beckon with their mystery. As mankind learns more of this seemingly endless resource, the more it is revealed how little is actually known.

Combined, the four oceans cover seventy-one percent of the Earth's surface. The water they contain is ninety-seven percent of the total water on earth. Each of the oceans makes a contribution to the entire global system. Some of these contributions can be wholly unique, based on the currents, and the position on the globe. From monsoons to El Niño the effects can be felt in one region or on a global scale.
