Saturn is
the sixth planet from the sun. It is the last planet that was known to ancient
people. Saturn is slightly smaller than Jupiter yet
their compositions are very similar. The two planets do, however, have some
differences which are mainly due to Saturn's slightly smaller size. Saturn has
the lowest bulk density of all the planets. It's bulk density is less than
water's. Saturn has a cloudy atmosphere that rotates differentially. The
rotation of Saturn causes it to be visibly oblate.
The atmosphere of Saturn is similar to Jupiter's as it too has belts that run parallel to the equator. Similar chemical compositions have also been found in Saturn's atmosphere. There is a smaller amount of ammonia on Saturn, probably a result of the colder temperature on Saturn and the ammonia leaving the atmosphere as ammonia snow. The lower temperature of Saturn also results in the clouds of Saturn being closer to the interior, making it appear less colorful. Saturn also has large sustained storms. Winds on Saturn are much stronger than those on Jupiter.
A unique feature of Saturn is its large rings. While Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have rings, they are all faint and were discovered after Saturn's.
