Search engines also provide many other useful tools to aid users in searching the Internet. In addition to the basic searching function, there is also an advanced searching function on most search engines. It is usually located next to or underneath the text box and is called advanced search or search options. Click on the link to go to the advanced searching page.

The advanced searching page will give you many more options than the basic search. You can search a specific domain name, ask for pages created between certain dates, and include or exclude words. Each advanced search is different depending on what search engine you use. In this example, the search engine Infoseek is used.

This search engine allows you to search by having the Document contain or exclude certain words. You can also search specific URL's or locations. Each box contains pull down menus for other options. Most search engines also have also have directions showing how to use their advanced search functions.

Almost all search engines also have topic lists that you can choose from. These topic lists allow you to access what the administrators of the search engines feel are the best pages on topics ranging from art history to the military. Many search engines also provide free email and homepages, links to news stories and weather information. Here is the homepage of Yahoo! This search engine provides many of the features we have just listed to its users.
