Note About this Research, and Research Problems

The following pages are a result of several months of study, done by Jennifer Taylor, into the origins, myths, and questions surrounding the Amazons of ancient Greek mythology. This research project was presented at the Minnesota State University, Mankato, Undergraduate Research Conference in the Spring of 1999, titled, "Warrior Women of Ancient Greece: Myth or Reality?". The Amazon research presented at the conference was also presented as part of my senior project into the culture of Ancient Greece.

The research presented here used many different research materials and sources to present it's theories and conclusions. Some of the sources came from the internet, others from maps and atlas's of ancient history, many from articles and books about the Eurasian Steppes and other areas. Limited research material exists about the Amazons, and research material that does exist had to be carefully screened. One of the largest problems in this research was the use of reference materials. Many books contained sloppy research, and in particular, The Encyclopedia of Amazons, a resource used by many Amazon researchers, had to be almost completely thrown out because it lacked a bibliography. Similar problems in finding references and research materials were also found in sources on the internet, articles, and other materials. What is presented within these WebPages are the conclusions, myths, and theories about the Amazons of ancient Greece, using as reference points many different sources to compare and contrast facts and formulate possible theories. It is important for the reader to note, that much more research into the topic of the Amazons has yet to be done, and the theories, views and research presented on these pages are only one of many viewpoints on the Amazons.
