Some of the most important characters in Ancient Egyptian history are women such as; Ankhesnamun, Cleopatra VII, Hatshepsut, Nefertari, and Nefertiti (http://www.kingtutone.com/queens/). Some of these women were highly respected wives of a Pharaoh, while others were destined to take the throne and rule egypt in the Pharaoh's place.
The "Great Royal Wife" was a title given to the wife of the Pharaoh on the day of his coronation (http://www.ancienthistory.about.com/library/bl/bl_greatroyalwife.htm). The Great Royal Wife was sometimes the sister or even the daugher of the pharaoh. The pharaoh would often mary his sister or daughter in order to keep the royal blood line pure. The Pharaoh would have also had other wives. The Great Royal Wife was not necessarily the wife chosen to bear the pharaoh's children.
