Caesars family were patricians. This means that they were Romes original nobility. However, they were only in the second or third rank politically. The family was said to have been descended from Venus. This led Caesar to wear the image of the armed Venus on his ring and use her name as a military rallying cry. Caesar first married Cornelia, breaking an engagement with Cossutia to do so. This marriage was important politically. They had a daughter named Julia. However, while he was married to Cornelia, he fell in love with Cleopatra and lived as her husband. They had a son named Ptolemy Caesar who was called Caesarion. His second marriage was to Pompeia and since there seems to be little political connections it may have been a love match. His third wife was Calpurnia.
