Necho II came to the throne in 658 B.C.E. He maintained a strong foreign involvement by taking Palestine as an Egyptian possession once again (this is described in the Bible in the second Book of Kings) and recruited the displaced Ionian Greeks to form an Egyptian navy. Also during his rule, a canal for ships was dug through the Wadi Tumilat, the land between the Nile and the Red Sea.
