The Silvernale site is located on the south bank of the Cannon River near Red Wing, Minnesota. It is an extensive mound site containing 317 mounds, according to Lewis's surveys in 1885. A pyramidal style mound was reported to be near the Silvernale site at the junction of the Cannon and Mississippi Rivers. However, this type of mound has not been reported to be on the Silvernale site.
Approximately 80% of the pottery found at Silvernale is shell tempered. The remaining 20% is grit tempered pottery, and was assigned to Woodland (5%) and Cambria (15%) by Lloyd Wilford. Some types of designs were rolled rims, no necks, and mostly curvilinear designs. Other designs included spiral, scrolls, and chevrons. There were rarely handles on the vessels, however the few found were shaped like a loop.
Some other items commonly found were projectile points. Most are small triangular points with side notches or unnotched entirely. There has also been a scapula hoe found, and red sandstone arrow shaft scrapers.
