With the utilization of mammals as food sources, tool use became a means of survival. Many tools of the Late Woodland cultural area were made of bone and antler. There were hide scrapers with antler handles, bone hide fleshers, bone awls, punches, knives and drills. The most common tool was the grooved maul used to pound dried meat and berries (Johnson, p.14). Dice used for games were also made of bone.
