Late Woodland Pottery

The Late Woodland pottery was significantly different from that of the previous Woodland Cultures. The pottery was made of sand or pulverized granite mixed with clay. The forms were round and globular in shape. The neck of the pots were constricted with flaring rims at the mouth.

The pottery items were decorated with shapes pressed into the clay or stamped with a paddle wrapped in sinew or plant fibers. This gave the items a corded, exterior look (Johnson, p.18).

Woodland pottery was mostly used for cooking and storage. Decorative pottery items were also placed in burial mounds.
