Archaic Peoples of Michigan

The Archaic culture found in the state of Michigan dates back to the period between 11,000 and 5000 BP. No large permanent sites have been located to date, but this is believed to be due to the rise in water levels from the Chippewa-Stanley rivers which increased water levels in the Great Lakes, covering former sites. It has been established that very few people lived in this region because the environment which existed in Michigan during this period was not favorable for the adaptations of the Archaic peoples of this time. Intense surveys of this region are still being done today, such as the Holcombe site which indicates a hunting camp some time between 10,000-9000 BP with projectile points and scrapers, which became more widely spread within the next few hundred years.
