Shield Archaic

Within the Great Lakes region during the late Archaic period (5000 BP-2000 BP), there existed a thriving economy based on hunting and fishing known as the Shield Archaic people. Seven distinguishable notches have been identified on the projectile points and copper items were used for ornamentation on spears and other utility knives defining this unique culture. It has been established that the peoples of this area were ancestors of the northern Algonquian and central/western Cree.
