Anasazi Culture
During the transition from the
technological period to that of the political starting at about 3000BP, a
cultural tradition arose from the archaic Pueblo traditions of the Southwest.
This culture has become known as the Anasazi Culture, and it included a vast
number of differing phases throughout its height. The Anasazi tradition had
adapted to its surroundings through the use of ditch irrigation and flood water
farming. Evidence suggests the use of maize and bean-squash along with local
wild plants as a major source of subsistence. The Anasazi also built great
structures known as kivas. These kivas can be found in the area known as
Chaco
Canyon. The pottery of this locale was based on coiling and scraping and
included black geometric designs on a gray surface. Anasazi cherds (pottery
shards) have been found ranging from northern New Mexico to southern Colorado
and Utah.
