Mogollon Culture
The Mogollon culture appears to have arisen from the
earlier Cochise culture. The Mogollon people lived
in the mountainous region of Arizona from about 2100BP (Before Present) to its climax
around 600BP. They knew about agriculture and did use it, but they many
depended mainly on hunting and gathering for survival. They built their homes
on easily defended outcropping near their fields. As their culture advanced,
they began to build larger multi-storied buildings instead of the smaller pit
houses.
Anthropologists believe that, sometime between 900 and 1100 AD, the Anasazi culture absorbed much of the Mogollon culture, merging traits from both. Total abandonment of these areas, however, did not occur until about 1450. It is believed that this merged culture contributed to the cultural background of the Hopi, Zuni and Acoma.
