Tularosa/Cordova Caves

Both Tularosa and Cordova Caves are excellent examples of the transition from the Cochise to Mogollon tradition.Because of its dryness artifacts were preserved, and there is a lot of them. Foodstuffs found within the caves include: Maize, beans, squashes, gourds, and a wild variety of wild plants found within the immediate area. The first occupation of the area occurred before the introduction of pottery into the region. Tools found include sandals, flexible cradles, netted carrying bags, leather items, flute, knives, scrappers, and hammers.

Later occupants brought with them the skill of pottery making (100 BC.). The pottery tradition is known as Alma Plain, Alma Rough, and San Francisco Red. All types are simple showing an influence from Mexico.
