Topanga
Topanga was another early Indian culture located in
southern California. These Indians were also somewhat related to the earliest
Indian culture in California, the San Dieguito. This culture moved into the
southern California region in about 7150 years BP. The Topanga culture, much
like their relatives, were tool makers. Their tool making niche produced things
like hammerstones, early projectile points, srapers and cutting tools. These
Indians, however, were known for their process of making these tools than they
were for using them. The Topanga culture did hunt small animal that surrounded
their landscape with atlatls. The early projectile points were positioned on
these atlatls to kill their pray. These Indians used the bones of these animals
to produce other tools later such as bone awls and flakers beads.
