The Yurok lived along the Klamath River in California
and near the coast. They were mainly dependent on salmon and lamprey, however,
they also gather acorns and seeds. The Yurok lived during historic times, yet
were in a relatively inaccessible area and outside cultures were less
influential for the Yurok than for surrounding people. The Yurok and the Hupa
were nearly identical in clothing, ornaments, dwellings, utensils, food and
methods of hunting and fishing. Politically, the Yurok were divided into
villages and socially into families. There were no clans.
