This interactive course is designed to teach skills for monitoring the development and progression of tardive dkyskinesia. Tardive dyskinesia consists of specific involuntary movements in seven different areas of the body. It is a potentially persistent side effect for people who are taking antipsychotic (neuropathic) medications.
Skills including learning the DISCUS rating scale, the medical standard used to measure tardive dyskinesia. The MOSES, a general side effect assessment scale for psychotropic medications, is also reviewed. A series of videotapes enable participants to practice using the DISCUS and demonstrate skills for DISCUS rating.
This DISCUS course will teach you to screen for the presence of tardive dyskinesia in all people who receive antipsychotic medication.

Karen Finck, RN, MN, CS is a clinical specialist in psychiatric nursing and president of Health Counseling Services in Minneapolis. Ms. Finck's expertise in community nursing care models includes nursing consultation for group homes, day activity centers, home healthcare, nursing supervision of unlicensed staff and psychiatric nursing home visits. She has designed medication administration and other healthcare courses, and written healthcare policy and procedure manuals for community settings. An engaging speaker, Ms. Finck lectures throughout Minnesota on mental health topics. She adeptly uses humor and presents real-life anecdotes for her practice experiences. She provides and understandable theoretical framework, along with practical approaches.
