Session Topics

Meeting Management
Tuesday, April 8, 2008
9:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.

This session will explore ways to make decision making meetings more effective for your corporation/group.  We will be discussing techniques to run an effective meeting, Roberts Rules of Order, decision making techniques and participation in meetings. Roles and leadership styles will also be covered.

Jessica Samens is currently an instructor in the Speech Communication Department at MSU, Mankato. 

 

Effective Listening

9:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.

We will examine and practice the communication process of listening as it relates to one’s life and work.  Attendees will evaluate their own listening ability and explore a menu of ideas to improve their skills.

Christa Brown is member of the International Listening Association, Christa has presented on effective listening skills and awareness in classrooms, businesses in the area, as well as conference presentations. Christa is currently an instructor in the Speech Communication Department at MSU, Mankato.

Dr. Nanette Johnson Curiskis is an internationally recognized scholar in effective listening and currently serves as the executive secretary of the International Listening Association. Nan is an  associate professor in the Speech Communication Department at MSU, Mankato.

 

Generational & Relationship Communication

Participants are invited to explore interpersonal communication dynamics through the life span. We will discuss how relationships develop and form at different stages in the life span, as well as examine how to sustain relationships with others who are at a different life stage than ourselves. Participants will understand the communication process and the tools to become competent communicators in relationships. During the session, participants will be given the chance to articulate and practice the skills needed to become competent communicators in order to sustain and create healthy relationships with others.

Katthleen Crawford is an instructor of Speech Communication at MSU, Mankato. Lynn Kuechle is an instructor of Speech Communication at MSU, Mankato.

 

Organizational Storytelling

9:00 A.M.-12:00 P.M.

The session will help participants learn more about how stories function in an organizational setting.  Stories are a useful tool in managing workplace conflict, communicating organizational values and training new employees.  Participants will assess their own storytelling abilites, as well as engage in interactive excercises designed to improve their storytelling skills.

 Dr. Leah White is an Assistant Professor and Director of Forensics in the Speech Communication Department at MSU, Mankato.  Her main areas of interest are Performance Studies and Forensic Pedagogy.
