Description:

Expand your knowledge of school social work by attending the International School Social Work Conference in Auckland, New Zealand and learn about issues that impact school social workers from many countries. Students will visit a school, ride on a luge and a gondola, go on a coffee cruise in the Auckland inner harbor, and enjoy the hospitality of a local host family. Come improve your knowledge of school social work from an international perspective and enhance your cultural competence skills in practice.

This section of Social Work 485/585: Topics in International School Social Work is specifically designed to address issues presented at the International School Social Work Conference which will be held at the Spencer on Byron, Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand, April 14-17, 2009. Attendance at the conference is mandatory and constitutes the face to face hours required for this course.

Syllabus for Current Topics in School Social Work from an International Perspective

Admission:

  • Undergraduate Credits:
    • Students who are currently or have previously taken courses from Minnesota State do NOT need to reapply for admission.
    • Students who have been out of high school three or more years may apply by completing the Extended Learning Permission to Register form.
    • Students who have been out of high school less than three years must make formal application to the University through the Office of Admissions.
  • Graduate Credit:
    • Students who are currently or have previously taken courses from Minnesota State do NOT need to reapply for admission.
    • Students who have not been admitted to the College of Graduate Studies should complete the Graduate Application Form.
      • Choose non-degree seeking and transcripts and fees are not required (this will allow a student to take up to 12 credits before formal admission is required).

Registration

  • Students who completed the Extended Learning Permission to Register form must contact Extended Learning (ext@mnsu.edu, 507-389-2572 or 800-311-3142) to register.
  • Other admitted students will register online. Students will need their Tech ID and PIN (provided by Admissions or the College of Graduate Studies) in order to register.

You will not receive an invoice from the University for the tuition cost. Payment is made online at https://www.mnsu.edu/eservices. You will need your Tech ID and PIN to make payments.
The above site does not accept International based credit cards. Information on Wire Transfers and Check/Drafts from foreign banks.

Financial Aid:

Steps to apply for financial aid to cover the costs of SOWK485/585

If you are a Minnesota State Mankato student taking 6 credits during Spring Semester 2009:
1) Go to the International Programs Office (IPO) to obtain a cost sheet for the trip.
2) Go to the Campus HUB in CSU and get a budget adjustment form
3) Attach the Student Cost Sheet to the completed budget adjustment form and submit both forms to the Campus Hub.

Note: If you are eligible for a budget adjustment to cover the cost of this course, additional loan funds will be distributed within a month after the semester has started, assuming all necessary paperwork has been completed.  The only possible additional aid are loans which may include alternative loan funding which is not guaranteed funding as it usually requires a credit-worthy co-singer and generally has higher interest rates and fees associated with it.

If you are a student taking 6 credits during Spring Semester 2009 at ANOTHER COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY:
1) Download a copy of the draft Student Cost Sheet and take it to your Financial Aid office to inquire about completing a Consortium Agreement form for them to submit to Minnesota State University, Mankato.
2) Once you have enrolled in the SOWK485/585 course at Minnesota State Mankato the financial aid office at Minnesota State Mankato will sign the Consortium agreement and send it back to your university.
3) Financial aid decisions will then be made and disbursed by your university.
