Program Description

The JD-MPA dual degree program allows students interested in both law and public administration to concurrently enroll in the Juris Doctor (J.D.) program at William Mitchell College of Law and in the Master of Public Administration (MPA) program at MSU.

Unlike a joint degree, which combines two disciplines into one course of study and results in just one degree, the dual degree allows you to earn two degrees, each from a different institution. Upon completion of the dual degree program, you will be fully credentialed in two separate, but related, fields.

The program can be completed in as little as 4 years if you attend William Mitchell full-time and MSU part-time in the evenings or on weekends. Each degree must be completed within 6 years.
Admission Requirements

Admission to both William Mitchell’s J.D. program and to MSU’s MPA program is required. We recommend that you seek admission concurrently to both programs.

Admission Requirements for the MPA (Master of Public Administration) are:

  • An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for the last two years of undergraduate coursework,
    OR: Other factors (e.g. promising public or private sector work experience) demonstrating that the program can be successfully completed.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university;
  • All students need a reasonable background knowledge in government and quantitative methods.  In some cases, the student's advisor may require that knowledge and skill deficiencies be remedied.
