Program Description
|
The undergraduate Major in Special Education is designed to meet Minnesota teaching licensure standards in the area of Special Education -Developmental Cognitive Disability (DCD). Successful completion of the program will also lead to a Bachelor in Science Degree in Special Education. The program requires full-time commitment from students for 4 semesters. Once admitted, students will go through the same program sequence, together with peers who are admitted during the same year. Students will have multiple opportunities for clinical experiences to work with students with disabilities in public schools throughout the program.

- SPED 331 – Elementary methods for teaching students with developmental cognitive disabilities
- SPED 414 – Literacy Methods in the Inclusive Classroom: Diverse Learners
- SPED 412 - Due Process, Planning and Design of Individual Education Programs

- SPED 448 – Behavior Management and Learning Environments for Diverse Learners
- SPED 411 – Differentiation and Accommodation in the Inclusive Classroom: Diverse Learners
- SPED 480 – Characteristics and Assessment of Children with Autism

- SPED 333 – Transition Planning and Secondary Methods for Student with Developmental Cognitive Disabilities

Admission Requirements

Basic Requirements
- Completion of admission application to Minnesota State University, Mankato
- Completion of General Education Coursework:This requirement can also be met by:
- AA, BS, or BA degree
- Completed Associate of Science degree in Special Education Foundations (offered at Normandale Community College)
- Completion of General Education Course work – including the options a) and b) – must include the following courses or their equivalents:

- Completion of Biographical Information form accompanied by current transcript
- Attend and complete the Professional Education Process session coordinated by MSU, College of Education, which includes:
- Completion of Praxis 1: Pre-Professional Skills Test (PPST)
- Completion of Writing Assessment Lab
- Completion of Survey
