Program Description

Special Education offers graduate programs designed to prepare professionals to work in a variety of organizational settings and positions serving individuals with special needs, as well as programs designed to help professionals better serve the needs of all students in general educational settings.

There are three specific areas of graduate study:

First, Learning Disabilities (LD).  This program is designed for licensure and a MS in Special Education: Learning Disabilities.

Second, Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD).  This program is designed for licensure and a MS in Special Education: Emotional/Behavioral Disorders.

Third, we offer a post-bac program in Special Education LD and EBD for students with an undergraduate degree outside of education.

All licensure courses count toward the MS degree.

Admission Requirements

The applicant must request that the educational and testing institutions send official scores and transcripts directly to the College of Graduate Studies and Research. Upon receipt of these materials, the college of graduate studies will forward the applicant’s file to the graduate coordinator. Admission applications are reviewed continuously. Students must submit an application to take graduate courses prior to taking the first graduate course, and applicants must apply for admission and be admitted to the program prior to completion of 10 graduate credits applied toward the degree.

To be considered for admission to the LD and EBD programs, candidates must submit the following 2 items:

  • A completed application form (the standard university application form—required by the graduate college).
  • Official college transcripts (required by the graduate college and provides information about previous course work and degrees).

Candidates must have a GPA of 2.75 or above for admission to the Certificate/licensure program.  They can upgrade to the MS program after 13 credits with a GPA above 3.2 in their graduate work.  Students with a GPA of 3.2 or above may apply directly to the MS program.
