The learning community programs being offered for the 2010-2011 academic year are listed below.

Learning community enrollment for 2010-2011 is now closed.  Please note: the learning communities listed below are for 2010-2011.  They are subject to change for the 2011-2012 academic year.

Anatomy of Nursing

If you're planning to pursue a degree in Nursing, consider living and studying with other students who share your interest in healthcare. This learning community will help you develop a solid foundation in this challenging major. You'll meet faculty and staff, enhance your academic skills, and learn about career options.

What you'll take:

As a part of the learning community, you'll enroll in the following courses:

Fall Semester:

  • NURS 110: Nursing Perspectives (1 credit)
  • BIOL 220: Human Anatomy (4 credits)
  • ENG 101: English Composition (4 credits)
  • FYEX 100: First Year Seminar (1 credit)

Spring Semester:

  • CHEM 111: Chemistry of Life Processes (5 credits)
  • NURS 101W: Courage, Caring and Teambuilding (3 credits)
  • PSYC 101: Introduction to Psychology (4 credits)

What to do:

  • Apply and be admitted to Minnesota State Mankato as a first-year student for fall semester 2010.
  • Have a Residential Life housing contract for the 2010-2011 academic year.
  • Take college preparatory biology and chemistry classes in high school (highly recommended).

Aviation

Please note that this learning community does NOT have the housing component.  Students in this group will be co-enrolled in the courses listed below, but will not have a Learning Community Coordinator and will not live in clustered housing.

You'll be immediately immersted in Aviation courses and enjoy strong faculty connections and peer interaction while getting the extra support students in this hands-on major need.

What you'll take:

Choosing and Changing Majors

"Undecided" majors unite! Join other first-year students in a learning community that gives you an opportunity to learn about yourself, develop a plan of study, and explore career opportunities. You'll learn new tools to help you set and reach personal goals and become a successful lifelong learner.

Dental Hygiene

If you're a future dental hygienist, this learning community will give you camaraderie and support as you complete Dental Hygiene prerequisite courses, participate in activities, and develop relationships with faculty from the Dental Hygiene department.

What you'll take:

As a part of the learning community, you'll be enrolled in the following courses:

Fall Semester:

  • DHYG 100: Dental Hygiene Perspectives (1 credit)

It is recommended, although not a part of the learning community courses, that students also register for:

  • PSYC 101: Introduction to Psychology (4 credits) or
  • CHEM 106: Introduction to Chemistry (3 credits) for students with a limited Chemistry background or for students who did not take Chemistry in high school. or
  • MATH 098 Intermediate Algebra (4 credits) for students with limited math background

Failure to complete a minimum of 16 credits per semester may result in a five-year completion of the bachelor's degree.

Spring Semester:

Elementary Education

In this learning community, future teachers develop an understanding of teaching and professionalism through active learning experiences like tutoring, shadowing, and mentoring in school settings. Your commitment to the field will be strengthened while living and studying with fellow Elementary Education majors.

What you'll take:

As a part of the learning community, you'll be enrolled in the following courses:

It is recommended, although not a part of the learning community courses, that students with a limited Math background also register for MATH 098 Intermediate Algebra (4 credits).

Exploring Communication and Culture

If you are interested in learning about cultures other than your own, this learning community will provide plenty of global interaction opportunities.  Specifically designed to help Minnesota State Mankato's international students and domestic U.S. students intereact and learn from each other.  The courses chosen satisfy General Education requirements, but also help students explore cultures from around the world.  Excellent for international students, students majoring in International Business, International Relations, Modern Languages, or any student who is interested in immersing themselves in a variety of cultural experiences right here in Southern Minnesota.  Also perfect for the student who plans to study abroad during their academic career.

What you'll take:

Exploring Health Careers

If you're interested in working in the health professions but haven't narrowed it down to a specific field, this learning community may be for you. You'll develop strong connections to faculty and staff in the College of Allied Health and Nursing who will guide you through the wide variety of careers in the health fields. The courses offered fill requirements for many health related majors as well as General Education requirements.

What you'll take:

As a part of the learning community, you'll be enrolled in the following courses:

Introduction to Business and Economics

If you plan to enter the business world, this popular learning community will help you distinguish between the various majors and career paths within the fields of Business and Economics. You'll also learn how to apply the tools and principles of these two fields to your own personal and business decisions through active learning and group work.

Pre-Engineering: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering

Not only will you receive an introduction to one of the four fields of professional engineering offered at Minnesota State Mankato in this learning community, you will also have the opportunity to interact with select faculty from these departments, take part in organized study groups and interact with peers studying the same subjects. This learning community is recommended only for students majoring in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Computer Engineering. It is NOT recommended for students with any other major.

What you'll take:

  • ME or CIVE 101 or EE 106: Introduction to Engineering (2 credits)

Women in Science and Engineering

Women who have declared or are considering a major in the sciences will enjoy the out-of-class opportunities for study groups, investigation of career options, and social connections with like-minded students.

*Select Biology or Chemistry based on your area of interest.

**Students will be placed into appropriate Math course based on ACT Math and Minnesota State Mankato Math Placement Scores. Students not eligible for MATH 115 or higher will still be eligible to enroll in the learning community and will take the appropriate Math course (not included in the Learning Community).
