


Registration is the process of enrolling in courses for a term and possibly making adjustments (adding, dropping, withdrawing, changing grading method) to that schedule of classes. Registration for classes is done via the web by securely logging into the MnSCU web system using a tech ID and a PIN. For any given term the same basic pattern is followed:

Academic advisors are assigned to all students. Students who have declared a major are assigned to the Student Relations Coordinator for the college in which their major is housed. A total of 44 credits must to completed to satisfy the general education program at Minnesota State Mankato. General education is made up of thirteen categories and two diversity requirements. Categories with requirements include:
Category 1: Communication; 3 credits composition, 3 credits speech and oral reasoning, and 6 writing intensive credits from different disciplines
Category 2: (Optional) Critical Thinking; requires completion of general education or one course
Category 3: Natural Science; 2 courses from different disciplines, 6 or more credits. At least one course with a laboratory
Category 4: Mathematical/Logical Reasoning; requires one course, 3 credits or more with a grade of at least "P" or "C"
Category 5: History and the Social and Behavioral Sciences; requires 2 course from different disciplines, 6 or more credits
Category 6: Humanities and Arts; requires 2 courses from different disciplines, 6 or more credits
Category 7: Human Diversity; requires one course, 3 or more credits
Category 8: Global Perspective; requires one course, 3 or more credits
Category 9: Ethical and Civic Responsibility; requires one course, 3 or more credits
Category 10: People and the Environment; requires one course, 3 or more credits
Category 11: Performance and Participation; requires 2-3 credits

Cultural Diversity Requirement: Students pursuing a baccalaureate degree must take at least 2 courses and a minimum of 6 credits from the list of cultural diversity courses.

Students who drop below a 2.0 GPA or have less than a 67% course completion rate will be placed on academic probation. The Office of First Year Experience provides probation advising services to help undecided students to work towards good academic standing. Students who have a declared major will need to contact their college to participate in probation advising services.

The Center for Academic Success offers a variety of services to students who are struggling with courses. In addition to tutoring services, the Center for Academic Success offers workshops and information on motivation, fighting procrastination, time management, study skills, test taking strategies and preparation, and much more. The Centennial Student Union also houses television lounges, a bowling alley, billiards tables and several arcade style games.
Minnesota State University Mankato recognizes 7 fraternities and 4 sororities. About 400 students or roughly 3% of the student population participates in Greek life on campus. The vision for the Greek community is to grow in all areas including personal, scholastic and chapter development; to better the university for all students regardless of affiliations and to achieve a higher level of unity, loyalty and respect. Part-time employment can be a great way for students to earn money and gain experience for their future professional career. The MSU Career Development Center assists students in finding part-time employment in a variety of ways.
Mavjobs.com is a search engine that allows access to part-time employment opportunities both on and off campus. The Career Development Center will automatically create a Mavjobs.com account for all incoming students at the start of the semester in which they enroll. The user id is the student's full Minnesota State Mankato email address in the form firstname.lastname@mnsu.edu.

There are several ways in which students can get involved in campus life. Students can participate in one of dozens of recognized student organizations ranging from honorary/professional groups to religiously based groups. Students may also find a connection to the campus community through one of the 11 greek organizations or the dozens of intramural sports teams. Negotiating relationships is challenging for most everyone. If your student finds that they would like to discuss their feelings surrounding any type of relationship, the Counseling Center can help. The Counseling Center offers free, confidential help to assist students in resolving personal, social, and educational concerns that may be interfering with their ability to succeed at Minnesota State Mankato. The Counseling Center's services include short-term counseling, educational programming, crisis intervention, consultation, national testing, and referral to outside resources to all enrolled students. Residents are allowed to change rooms after the first 10 class days of each semester. Students who wish to change rooms or residence halls should pick up a room change request form at the main desk of any complex.
When a room change is approved and authorized student's receive written confirmation from Residential Life Staff. No changes may be made without such approval. Failure to properly check out of the room, including an improper room change, will result in the assessment of a $50 charge in addition to any other damage charges. Room changes at the end of each semester may be limited since new students for the following semester must be assigned. Back to top.

Students can obtain information about effective ways to search for an apartment, their rights as tenants, a sample apartment condition checklist, a sample roommate agreement, and a list of apartment complexes in the Mankato area. Anytime is a good time for student's to consider studying abroad. Students can choose to participate in international short term internships, short term programs led by Minnesota State faculty, 2 to 4 week language intensive programs, or a traditional student exchange for a semester or a year. All programs earn students course credits here at Minnesota State and additional financial aid is available to cover expenses. For more information contact the International Programs Office.
