Math Assessment Information

Minnesota State Mankato is committed to the academic success of all its students.  The ACT Math sub score is used for initial placement for mathematics course enrollment.  Students whose official reported ACT Math score is 18 or lower will be required to take Math 098 before enrolling in a credit-bearing mathematics course.  Credits for Math 098 are not applicable for degree but are applicable for financial aid and full-time student status.  If you believe that your ACT Math score does not reflect your math skills, you may take the Accuplacer Mathematics Assessment test to demonstrate mastery sufficient for placement in a college-level credit-bearing course.

The Accuplacer Mathematics Assessment test will be administered between 9:00 a.m and 10:00 a.m. the morning of the first day of the orientation session.

The placement test is an untimed, multiple choice exam and calculators are not permitted.  Sample problems can be viewed at www.mnsu.edu/success/mathtest.html

Unsure if you need to take the Mathematics Placement Exam?  Check out the links below for a list a majors and minimum mathematics requirements.

Students requesting testing accommodations need to contact the Minnesota State Mankato Office of Disability Services at 507-389-2825 as soon as possible to establish an academic accommodation plan.  Testing accommodations are available only to students with documented disabilities.  Students with disabilities must provide current documentation of their disability and meet with the Director of Disability Services in order to develop their accommodation plan.  This plan must be in place prior to orientation if test accommodations are to be provided.

English Placement Information

All students are required to satisfy the Category 1: Part A English Composition requirement by enrolling in English 101. Some students benefit from taking an additional writing course, prior to enrolling in English 101, in order to receive supplementary instruction in college-level writing. The English placement test lets students know when an additional writing course would be appropriate for them.

Placement Guidelines for English Course Enrollment:

Students seeking enrollment in English 101 must demonstrate readiness to succeed in the course through one of the following means:

  • an ACT English score of 18 or above
  • an SAT verbal score of 450 or above
  • or, if the student is an international student, a TOEFL score above 574 (paper-based), above 231 (computer-based), or above 88 (web-based), or an IELTS score above 6.4.

Students with ACT English scores below 18, students with SAT verbal scores below 450, or students admitted to the University without an ACT or SAT verbal score must take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension Test and pass it with a score of 78 or higher to enroll in English 101.
