Minnesota State Mankato is committed to the academic success of all its students. The ACT Math subscore and ACT English subscore are used for initial placement in Mathematics and Composition courses.

Math Placement

If you are planning to take MATH 112 or higher you will need to take the mathematics placement exam. If you have already taken a college level mathematics course and have not transferred this course to Minnesota State University, Mankato please bring a copy of your transcript which includes the course name and number and the grade you received in it.

Students whose official reported ACT Math score is 18 or lower will be required to take Math 098 before enrolling in a degree-bearing mathematics course. Credits for Math 098 are not applicable for degree but are applicable for financial aid and full-time student status. If you believe that your ACT Math score does not reflect your math skills, you may take the Accuplacer Mathematics assessment test to demonstrate mastery sufficient for placement in a college-level degree-bearing course.

The placement test is an untimed, multiple choice exam and calculators are not permitted. Sample problems can be viewed on the Mathematics Placement Testing page. Math Placement information will be sent in a confirmation email after you've reserved your space at orientation.

English Placement

All students are required to satisfy the Category 1: Part A English Composition requirement by enrolling in English 101. You will need to take the English Placement Assessment if you have not successfully (grade C or better) completed a college-level English Composition or Literature course accepted by Minnesota State University, Mankato or do not have the acceptable scores listed below on file with the University.

Students with ACT English subscores below 18, students with SAT verbal scores below 450, or students admitted to the University without an ACT or SAT verbal score must take the Accuplacer Reading Comprehension Test and pass it with a score of 78 or higher to enroll in English 101. Students with an Accuplacer Reading Comprehension test score below 78 must pass either English 100 or ESL 202 or ESL 210 with a grade of C or better before enrolling in English 101. If your test score falls below this benchmark, your advisor will discuss course options with you and help you determine which course to take. Here are the 2010 English Placement Guidelines.
