Hydrogeology concentrates
on study of aquifers, water movement,
water quality, and water production. Understanding ground water resources
is key to protecting drinking water supplies and some environments.
For example, this picture shows a monitoring well and data recorder
near a fragile bog in northern Minnesota. The bog owes its existence
to a shallow aquifer that is surprisingly small. Thus, the viability
of this important ecosystem is dependent on consistent rainfall and
ardent protection of the surrounding minor watershed. But you wouldn't
have known that unless you understood its hydrogeology...
