The Post–Master’s Nursing Certificate: Clinical Nurse Specialist program provides nurses that already have a master’s degree in another area of nursing the opportunity to complete courses necessary to seek national certification and practice as a clinical nurse specialist. The program prepares nurses to effectively influence the health outcomes of patients and clients, the practice of nursing personnel, and patient care processes and client population outcomes in the health care organization or network. The program consists of:

Nursing Science Component (5 credits)
NURS 620* Processes Influencing the Health Experience (3)
NURS 640* Family Nursing (2)

Advanced Practice Component (14 credits)
NURS 660* Organizational and Systems Leadership (3)
NURS 661* Advanced Practice I CNS (3)
NURS 648* Advanced Practice II CNS (3)
NURS 649* Advanced Practice III CNS (3)
Choice of either NURS 641*(2), NURS 642*(2), NURS 643*(2), or NURS 644*(2)

Supportive Fields Component (9 credits)
NURS 552* Advanced Health Assessment (3)
NURS 553* Advanced Pharmacology (3)
NURS 554* Advanced Pathophysiology (3)

*Students successfully completing the Post–Master’s Nursing CNS Certificate are expected to have completed the following graduate courses in their original nursing master’s program or the equivalent prior to admission or during their course of study at Minnesota State Mankato:

A graduate level statistics course plus
