Qualification Testing

About the Tests - There are eleven different tests offered; Alphanumeric Data Entry, Numeric Data Entry, Spelling, Grammar, Math, Word Processing, Typing, Spreadsheets, Customer Service, Phone Message Taking Skills, and Desktop Publishing. All applicants will be given a test booklet containing instructions and accompanying information for each test. Applicants may take any combination of the tests offered. All tests are automatically timed so the applicant may take tests in any order, one time, per testing session. The program will prompt the applicant as to what to do to complete each test. A test administrator will provide detailed instructions during the testing session.

Location and Times - - You may sign up to take tests by calling the Office of Human Resources in advance at 507-389-2015 as spaces are limited during each testing session. Testing is typically offered on Fridays from 9:30 am to 11:30 am in room ML (Memorial Library) 0094. Enter the library via the front entrance (SW corner of building). Take an immediate right in the foyer of the library and descend the stairwell into the basement. The testing room is located in the Technology and Teaching Center in the basement (unless otherwise specified).

Testing Regulations - Both current employees and new applicants who wish to apply for an open position must pass all applicable tests listed in the position qualifications on the posting.

  • If the applicant does not pass a particular test during the first testing session, they have two more opportunities to retest. The applicant should contact the Office of Human Resources at 507-389-2015 to schedule a retest.
  • If, after taking the same test three times, the applicant does not pass, they are permitted to retest only after a six (6) month waiting period.
  • All test scores are valid for one (1) year from the date taken and passed.
  • Scored tests will be recorded and results will be sent to each applicant by mail.
  • Calculators and scratch paper are permitted.

Scoring - For the Typing test, each applicant must type at least the minimum required words per minute and have no more than the number of errors allowed in the job posting qualifications. Unless otherwise specified, the position qualifications allow no more than one error per ten words. All other tests require a score of 70% or better. Any score equal to or above 70% is considered passing and does not need to be retaken.

Samples of Tests - Below are pictures of the screens from some of the tests. The computer screen will appear similar to the pictures. These are only SAMPLES. The actual tests include other sections and various testing questions in each area. Click on the test name to view sample.
