International Travel Links

  • World Hum is general travel page, with interesting links to news stories, travel blogs and everything under the international traveler's sun.
  • Igougo.com is a community of travelers sharing reviews and photos. It also has links to airfares.
  • Savvy Traveler is a fantastic sight with tons of resources about the logistics of travel abroad
  • Lonely Planet has a good website, with general country guides and a well-used online discussion called Thorntree. Use it to ask a country specific question.
  • Hostels.com is a searchable database of hostels around the world
  • Let's Go is a travel guide compiled by Harvard Students traveling the world
  • Rick Steves is the authority for Americans traveling in Europe
  • Rough Guides is another stellar guidebook publisher with great insights
  • Bootsnall is another great sight with a good discussion board and country specific information
  • The Art of Travel is a book written by John Gregory. You can read the entire book online
  • The University of the Pacific in Stockton, California produced this fantastic guide designed to make sense of cross cultural experiences, called What's Up With Culture? Try out the various modules, for some great tips from students that have studied and lived abroad.
  • Travelite is a great sight for travelers looking to take only what they need abroad

Work/Intern/Volunteer Abroad

  • Transitions Abroad is a great source for all things international. Find resources on travel, intern, volunteer and work programs.
  • Alliance Abroad offers volunteer, work and teaching programs in various countries, including Peru, South Africa, New Zealand and China. Programs last from 2 weeks up to several months
  • Work and Travel Ireland allows young people to obtain work visas for up to four months in Ireland.
  • AIFS Work in Australia facilitates a similar program in Australia
  • BUNAC is a good place to start for students interested in work permits to Britain, Ireland, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. They also run a international summer camp program, as well as volunteer programs in Peru and South Africa.
  • Intern Abroad.com is your one stop internship information page. Find internships all around the world, paid and unpaid.
  • From the University of Michigan's International Center, this page has general information on working abroad, appropriate regions, and tips of the trade
  • Idealist.org has a huge searchable database of international jobs and internships organized by geographic area, type of work, and others.

  • Flight Information

  • STA Travel is one of the best places to look for cheap tickets. They sometimes have discounts for students and allow a search for an "open-jawed" ticket, which allows travelers to leave from one destination, travel overland, and return from a different destination. Very useful.
  • Northwest Airlines has a major hub at the Minneapolis/St. Paul Airport. Northwest has a good selection of flights to Asia, as well as Europe, through their Dutch partner KLM
  • Easy Jet has some great deals on flight within Europe
  • Wegolo has great deals on flights to and within Europe
  • Zuji has great deals on flights to and within Asia
  • Smarter Travel is a good sight for news about flight sales, international and domestic
  • Priceline allows a traveler to make bids on plane tickets. If your bid is accepted, you are required to pay.
  • BetterBidding provides valuable advice for booking air travel online
  • Air Brokers sells Round The World Tickets (RTW) and Circle Pacific tickets
  • Kayak helps you find websites with the lowest air travel prices

Travel Insurance

  • MSU students studying abroad for any length of time, including study tours, are required to buy a International Student Identification Card (ISIC). This card provides the holder with many discounts abroad, as well as some basic supplementary insurance. Students should apply for the ISIC card at the IPO (CSU 238)
  • Atlas International has coverage plans ranging from seven days to thirty six months, backed by Lloyd's of London.
  • International Citizens has options in both their Platinum and Premier plans.
  • CMI Insurance Worldwide has options for both individuals and group plans. CMI includes the use of a 24-hour assistance line that students can call at any time with questions.
  • Cultural Insurance Services International is affiliated with AIFS and offers coverage starting at $34 a month for students under 25 years of age.
