Employment opportunities for foreign students in the U.S. are restricted by law. In general there are two types of employment: on-campus and off-campus employment.
Undergraduates who are in good standing with the University and CIS are eligible to work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week while school is in session without CIS approval so long as the job does not interfere with your ability to continue as a full-time student.During your vacation periods you may work full-time if you are an undergraduate. Graduate students may work up to 14 hours per week as student help and 20 hours per week if on an assistantship.
In limited circumstances, under the current CIS regulations, students who have been in-status for at least nine months or two academic semesters are SOMETIMES eligible to apply for off-campus work authorization. This could be full-time during the summer and the winter semester break, or part-time (limited to 20 hours of total employment per week, including any on-campus work) during the academic year.There are ohter two types of off campus work authorization for employment in your field of studies, also called "practical training": Curricular Practical Training and Optional Practical Training. However, you must contact ISO regarding ANY off-campus employment to see if you are eligible and to file necessary papers before beginning to work.
