Frequently Asked Questions about Secure Shell (SSH) File Transfer Client

Where can I watch for new clients?

SSH Secure Shell for Workstations is the site to watch for new versions of the Windows SSH client.

Should I update my client right away?

Our recommendation is that you watch this site for what version you should have installed. The version of SSH on MavDISK is dependent on what the new version fixes and how intrusive the upgrade will be. If the upgrade of the server software causes too much downtime or interferes with day-to-day operations we may skip minor revisions until it is necessary to update.

How does Secure Shell Differ from File Transfer Protocol (FTP)?

Secure Shell encrypts information passing between your machine and the server so password and username information is secure when passing over the network. For more information go to OpenSSH.

Why can't I connect using my FTP client to the SSH Port?

All transmissions are encrypted before sending them across the network to the server. Most FTP clients cannot encrypt information passing between the client and the server. Open SSH is the client free for Academic purposes and is the primary supported software package for our campus.
