KMSU Newsletter: July, 2008

Greetings KMSU listeners and supporters,

It is with great anticipation that we look to the upcoming Fall Semester at Minnesota State University, Mankato. One reason is that, by mid-September, we should be operating KMSU-FM with a new transmitter, along with a new antenna system mounted on a new tower! All of these infrastructure improvements mean one thing: More reliable service for you. Another exciting development is the creation of a mobile remote studio that will be debuting this fall at the Centennial Student Union. This will make KMSU much more visible to the students and staff of Minnesota State University, Mankato. Watch and listen for our upcoming celebration of all these improvements. I truly hope your summer has been delightful.

Best wishes,

Jim “Gully” Gullickson

NEWS:

Parades:

KMSU and one of our underwriting partners, St. Peter Food Co-op, teamed up for two parades this summer.  Our float had two radio towers with some clowns and trapeze artists hanging in between them with the slogan Local D.J.s Local Food. We had a great turn out in St. Peter’s 4th of July celebration and had lots of fun handing out our KMSU tattoos and candy, while the Co-op folks handed out pencils and organic lollipops.

The North Mankato Fun Days parade on July 12th was another big day for KMSU. It was a little hot, but we all survived. Students Zack Thieman and Allison Reul had a great time DJing on the float for this parade. It was a first for both of them and they did a super job. A special thanks to Reul family for driving the float and helping the entire day. In addition, we appreciate C & S Supply in Mankato for lending us the decorative windmills that were our “radio towers”, and the Hendrickson Organ Company of St. Peter for use of their trailer.

Thanks to all the volunteers and listeners who came out to help make these parades a success!

Nifty 50:

Our favorite radio host Gully turned 50 June 30th and we had a spec

ial guest in the studio; daysponsor Mike Daly.  He helped ring in Gully’s turning half a century old by playing uplifting gospel music.  Everyone at the station had a great time and many people stopped in to wish Gully a happy birthday.  Also, Gully’s wife, Shannon, made pineapple upside down cake for us all, which was amazing.  Thank you Shannon for the cake and also all the wonderful pictures of Gully you hung around the building.  If you’d like to be a sponsor for someone’s special day, you can pledge $100 dollars to acknowledge the event with a message or music by contacting us at www.kmsu.org.

Pretty in Purple:

All of the KMSU offices and studios have been re-painted and re-carpeted.  We are very purple right now, but it looks much better than the 70s colors. It has been a mess moving things in and out, but we continued to get the news and music out onto the airwaves! You can check out our new look during our upcoming open house on September 27, 2008.

Community Service for Kids:

KMSU had some visitor’s from MSU’s Children’s House day camp.  Fifteen campers came in and toured our station and read a story that we recorded for them. We provided everyone with a copy to take home.  Also, we have been working with pre-school teacher Ms. Ann Schmitz at the Children’s House making a storybook CD for all the kids. All of the production assistance was done by student worker Zack Thieman.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Welcome Week:

KMSU is teaming up with the MSU Greeks and Greater Mankato Growth on August 21, 2008 to help the incoming freshman get adjusted here at the MSU campus and the city of Mankato.  The event is hosted at the Alltel Center where local businesses will show what they have to offer.

Open House:

In honor of our new transmitter and tower, we are hosting an open house on September 27, 2008.  There will be some goodies served as well as speakers.  We encourage everyone to come out and celebrate with us. Watch for more information in upcoming newsletters.

WHO’S WHO OF KMSU:

Volunteer Profile:

The Quiet Storm – Mohamed (Moe) Alsadig

It’s all about love when it comes to Mohamed “Moe” Alsadig’s show The Quiet Storm. You can catch him on air discussing everything from relationships and dating to providing you with the mellow jams of Barry White, Luther Vandross, The Temptations and Aretha Franklin. Music has always been an element in Moe’s life. In the past he has worked as a DJ at parties and small events, but had always wanted to have his own radio show and was presented the opportunity by Jim Gullickson.  So for the past three and a half years Moe has been on the air and volunteering at KMSU.

Moe is of Sudanese decent and has spent time living in the United Arab Emirates. He graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a bachelor of science in Management Information Systems. The Quiet Storm is an outlet for Moe to remind people to take the time to appreciate the ones we love in the midst of our busy lives. Moe finds the show rewarding when he gets to hear from his fans. “I love it when people approach me and ask me if I’m Moe and how they love listening to the show and they just wait for Wednesdays so they can listen to the show.” Moe has lived in Mankato for the past 12 years and works as a technician in the clear wave department for Alltel Wireless. The Quiet Storm airs every Wednesday at 7 to 9 p.m.

MICELLANEIOUS:

Letters from KMSU Listeners:

Hi Karen,

The Current...well, they still haven't decided whether they'll play my favorite band’s music or not...from what I've heard (in all my requests for Smash Palace) they mainly play what's on the charts, plus one local song each hour.  But I guess there are a lot of politics to mainstream radio.  So when Stephen Butler of Smash Palace informed me that KMSU was playing their songs here in MN, I started listening to your program.  I've really enjoyed the variety of music you play and the interviews...

Thanks again for playing all that great music.

Miriam
