review: Congotronics
The band Konono No1 was founded in the
Kinshasa, Congo, suburbs over 25 years ago. They are known for their
uniqe approach to traditional Congolese trance music, as distinguished
by the heavily distorted sounds of their do-it-yourself amplification
systems. The musicians come from varied geographical and cultural
backgrounds and use diverse instrumentation although the trademark
is electrified thumb pianos and megaphones in an array of buzzing
drums, swirling guitars and hypnotic balafons.
