"New Orleans Christmas" has eleven tracks featuring the
likes of Big Al Carson with Lars Edegran & his Santa Claus Revelers
and New Orleans takes on classic Christmas tunes but we will be hearing
a couple of tracks that are pure New Orleans.

original Celtic Punks, the Pogues, first five albums were recently
reissued. Last month I played the Pogues "Dirty Old Town,"
from the Global Rhythms sampler disc. That tune piqued my interest
so I stopped by Tune Town, our local campus record shop, and purchased
a copy of the Pogues" If I Should Fall From Grace with God."
I was blown-away by their powerful and beautifully crafted song "Fairytale
of New York."

a collection of re-interpretations and re-inventions from three leading
Balkan Gypsy bands; Taraf de Haidouks, Koçani Orkestar, and
Mahala Rai Banda. This music is transformed from musicians on the
the Balkan Club Scene.
From the bonus cd, featuring original tracks; we will begin with a
tune by Balkan Gypsy Band, Koçani Orkestar.

the "blues of the Balkans." Its an urban musical genre that
was first introduced to Bosnia during Ottoman times. The group Mostar
Sevdah will be touring the US in the spring and summer of 2007.

Smithsonian Folkways just released
a recording by Iraqi oud master, Rahim Alhaj accompanied by percussionist,
Souhail Kaspar. Their music harkens back to the golden age of the
oud, from the Abbasid period (750-1258). Musical instruments have
an extremely long heritage in Iraq. An image of a woman playing a
lute, similar to an oud, is depicted on a Sumerian clay seal from
the prehistoric city of Uruk, date back to (4500-3100 B.C.)
