The group, Tinariwen is a hard-rocking hybrid of Berber, Arab, Western and black African styles. In the language of Tuareg nomads, the word “tinariwen” means “deserts.”
Their new release, called “Tassili” comes from the name of a spectacular region of canyons and sandstone arches near Algeria’s border with Libya. Tinariwen rehearsed and recorded this cd in tents and around campfires in Tassili.
