Program 8:  MUSICAL MANKATO - FROM SINGING SOCIETIES TO 60 YEARS OF THE MANKATO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Plato said, “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything else.”  Musician and retired music teacher Ken Gertjejansen and author Mary Huntley will discuss the 160-year history of music in Mankato, including that of the Mankato Symphony Orchestra.  Gertjejansen has been part of the MSO since 1950.  He played the organ and viola and is a long-time board member, as well as the historian and archivist.  Huntley, who played cello for several years, lives a life of appreciating and enjoying music.  She is a retired MSU-M nursing professor and author of several books.  Their booklets on singing societies, MSO history, stringed instrument education, and orchestra players and soloists will be available.  Sponsor: Carlienne Frisch

Program 9:  VISIT TO FORMER BLUE EARTH COUNTY POOR FARM,  NOW HOME AND ART STUDIOS OF DENISE (‘WILBUR’) NEUSHWANDER-FRINK AND BRIAN FRINK

Driving directions: By West High school take Stoltzman Road south past Applewood to County 90. There Stoltzman becomes County 16 or 568th Avenue.  Continue South ½ mile to 192 LN (gravel road). Turn right.  You will see a large yellow house on the left.  Turn into second driveway and park by the ramp.  Enter house by side entrance  (red door).  OR
    From Monk’s Ave. by MSU:  Take Monk’s Ave. south to the stop sign at County 90. Turn right.  Go to 568th Avenue or County 16, which is approx. one mile from the Monk’s turn.  Turn left on County 16, or 568th Avenue.  Go exactly ½ mile to 192 LN.  Turn right on 192 LN.  You will see the large yellow house on the left. Turn in the second drive and pull up by the ramp.  Enter the house from the side entrance (red door).  Sponsor:  Kelly Gage.

Program 10:  WHIZ BANG!  LEARNING THROUGH PLAY

Informal learning - the missing link in southern Minnesota’s education landscape. Activities and discussion will focus on the role a community can play in creating the conditions for children’s learning through play.  Learn about plans to establish a permanent children’s museum in Mankato from Jean Peterson, Retired Director of MSU-M’s Children’s House.  Sponsor:  Bob Utermohlen.
