With the rise in popularity of social media, it is a major concern for students to be safe while using popular sites such as Facebook or Twitter. In addition to helping students protect themselves on these sites, another goal of this topic is to help students protect themselves against computer hackers and viruses.

Tuesday, March 4: Identity Theft Presentation

A speaker will present on identity theft with a discussion involving a detective from Mankato Police Department.

When and Where:

Thursday, March 6: Social Media Stalking Demonstration

Names will be given to a speaker and she will demonstrate how stalkers are able to find personal information about people using only their names and other small bits of information. The speaker will then discuss ways to avoid unwanted people finding out personal information. There will also be a presentation by IT Services on OPSEC and Online Reputation Management.

Tuesday, March 18: Frauds/Scams Presentation

A speaker will discuss different frauds and scams that students may encounter while describing ways to prevent getting scammed. These scams/frauds include Phishing and Nigerian scams.

6:00 p.m. in Armstrong Hall (AH) 101

Thursday, March 20: Man-in-the-Middle

There will be a rogue access point that students will access and the speaker will demonstrate how people are able to gain private information through the access point. The speaker will then demonstrate how to recognize and avoid these unsecure/unknown access points.
