Letter to the Applicant

Dear Student

I would like to thank you for your interest in the McNair Achievement Program (MAP) at Minnesota State University, Mankato. The McNair Program is designed to increase the recruitment, retention and success of students who have been underserved by higher education. The purpose of the McNair Program is to provide its participants with high-quality and relevant research opportunities, access to technology, and concrete assistance in order to ensure success in terminal master's and doctoral programs after completing a bachelor's degree.

In order to qualify for the McNair Achievement Program, you must meet the following criteria:

1. Must express interest in pursuing a graduate degree leading up to a terminal master's or PhD.
2. Students who are currently Sophomores, or who will not graduate before May 2011.
3. Must meet at least one of the following criteria:
   • First-generation, low-income students or
   • From groups traditionally underrepresented in education (ie. Black (non–Hispanic), Hispanic, and American Indian/Alaskan Native)

Enclosed you will find a brochure, the low-income table, an application, and two recommendation forms. At least one recommendation should be from a professor that can attest to your academic abilities. All parts of the application and the following items must be submitted in order to be considered complete:

• Copy of Transcript
• Copy of Filed Income Tax
• Two Letters of Recommendation
• Essay Questions
