College of Education Dean

Jean Haar (pictured at right) has been named the new dean of the College of Education at Minnesota State University, Mankato, effective July 1. Haar’s appointment was announced by Provost and Vice President for Academic & Student Affairs Scott R. Olson.

Haar has served as interim dean of the College of Education since 2010. She has been a professor in the Educational Leadership Department since 2002, serving as department chair for one year.

Haar received a bachelor’s degree in English and a master’s degree in educational administration from South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D. She received her doctorate in administration, curriculum and instruction at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Haar said she looked forward to serving as the College of Education’s permanent dean. “I am excited to serve as dean of the College of Education and to nurture the legacy of excellence established within the college,” said Haar. “We have a dedicated faculty and staff who are passionate about making a difference. This position allows me to support their passion and sustain a culture that honors our mission and purpose to meet children, family, and community needs.”

Student Health Services Summer Hours

Student Health Services clinic will be open during the two summer sessions May 21 – July 27, Monday through Friday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. During the interim weeks (2 weeks in May, 3 weeks in August) it will be open Tuesday/Thursday 8 a.m. – 2 p.m. Pharmacy and lab will also be open during clinic hours. May 5: Commencement

Spring 2012 Commencement will be Saturday, May 5, in Bresnan Arena.

The day will begin at 9 a.m. with graduates from the colleges of Arts & Humanities and Science, Engineering & Technology. At noon graduates from the colleges of Allied Heath & Nursing and Education will commence. And at 3 p.m. students from the colleges of Business and Social & Behavioral Sciences will graduate.

May 7: Employee Appreciation Breakfast

All Minnesota State Mankato employees are invited to attend Employee Appreciation Breakfast Monday, May 7 between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. at Carkoski Commons.

The program is scheduled to start at 8:45 a.m.

The breakfast buffet includes pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, breakfast potatoes, fresh fruit, coffee & orange juice.

Offices may be closed for the period of time all staff members are at the event.

NACADA Award

Angie Bomier has been awarded Winner of the Outstanding Advising Award - Primary Advising Role, national-level award, from the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA). Established in 1983, the NACADA Annual Awards Program for Academic Advising honors individuals and institutions making significant contributions to the improvement of academic advising. NACADA is a representative and advocate of academic advising and those providing that service to higher education.

NACADA has grown to over 10,000 members and hosts an Annual Conference each fall that has attracted over 3,000 attendees, as well as 10 Regional Conferences, and intensive study of advising through various other events held throughout the year.

2012 SBS Awards

The College of Social and Behavioral Sciences 2012 Award Winners are:

  • Amy Bower and Melissa Luna (Social Work Club)
  • Katlyn McKenzie and Sara Ebsen (School Psychology Society)
  • Amber Schramm, Sara Kasten, Betlehem Semahge, Hilary Geesman, Jordan Anderson, Justin Henseler, Ganna Ivanova and Samargul Tabaldieva (Psi Chi/Psychology Club)

The award is given to a student or club for their diligent service to the community. The award recipient has had a large scope of volunteer activities with a strong level of commitment to the community. All award recipients are declared majors in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences or a club that is associated with a department in the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences.

The award recipients were recognized at a special breakfast ceremony on Monday, April 16.

2012 SBS Advisory Board Awards

The College of Social & Behavioral Sciences advisory board annually chooses and honors a student leader, a distinguished alumna/alumnus, and a distinguished professor. This year’s honorees are:

  • Alicia Reyes (Sociology and Corrections), College of Social & Behavioral Sciences student leader
  • David Childs (Geography and Urban and Regional Studies), College of Social & Behavioral Sciences distinguished alumnus
  • Barbara Keating (Sociology and Corrections), College of Social & Behavioral Sciences distinguished professor

The board makes its selections from nominations submitted by faculty, staff and students.

Faculty Achievements

Tom Inglot (Government Department) was invited to present a guest lecture on the "Independent Student Movement in Poland, 1980-81" for undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on April 19, 2012. This presentation was sponsored by the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA).

Tom Inglot (Government Department) delivered a guest lecture in the Lectures Committee Series at the University of Wisconsin - Madison on April 19, 2012. His presentation was entitled "Building Welfare States for the Young Generation in Postcommunist Europe: The Politics of Family Policy in Hungary, Poland, and Romania." This lecture was sponsored by the Center for Russia, East Europe, and Central Asia (CREECA), Department of Political Science, and the European Union Center for Excellence.

Minnesota State Mankato won an ASHRAE Undergraduate Senior Project Grant. MSU's proposal was to design and construct a renewable and HVAC technologies test-bed "shack". The "shack" will be designed to accommodate a range of technologies for demonstration and testing in the classroom and research projects.

Student Achievements

Laura Milligan (Des Moines, Iowa) has been selected as the 2012 Meredith Scholar at Minnesota State Mankato. She is a senior at West Des Moines, Iowa High School. The scholarship award amount is $8,000 per year each academic year for four years and will pay Milligan’s tuition, fees and some of her day-to-day college expenses.

Honors Program Newsletter

The Honors Program students have completed their second issue of their newsletter - The Beacon. The stories will provide readers with vivid examples of the university’s vision for the program through the students’ eyes. Paper copies are available in the Honors/Undergraduate Research Center lounge, located in Morris Hall 265.

Thanks to junior Grace Webb and her staff for producing the newsletter this year. First-year students Alyssa Filip and Anastasia Humphers-Ginther will co-edit the newsletter in 2012-2013.
