Arlis' hometown

Arlis Ruder, was born Arlis Sue Meyer on December 15, 1956 in Worthington, Minnesota. She was the first of five children born to Garrett and Joyce Meyer. Arlis grew up in rural Minnesota, mostly living on a farm where the contribution of her and her siblings were part of their daily lives. Arlis' parents, especially her father, were very busy.

Religion had a large impact on her family and school life. Arlis attended conservative Christian schools and attended church gatherings three times per week with her family, which left her little time for friends and social gatherings, such as dating. After high school she attended a vocational school, forty-five minutes from home, where she had more opportunities for socializing. Although she attended the same school as her husband, they did not meet until after they had completed school. They were married a few months later, when she was 19, and began their life together.
