Debra Dee Bolton (Howell) was born December 25, 1952, in Sendai, Japan to Dana Ruth Agan Bolton and Emerson Merle Bolton. Her father was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army and her mother taught GIs and their children. Debra moved to the U.S. when she was eighteen months old. She had two siblings, including a sister named Cindy who was born in 1955 but died in car accident before she turned two. Debra also has a brother named Jeff, who was born in March 1957. Her mother and father divorced in December 1957.

When her family moved back from Japan in 1954, they lived on farm with her mom’s family for a year. They then moved to Des Moines, Iowa, where Debra’s mother took a job teaching at a new elementary school. Debra often felt uncomfortable talking about her parents when she was growing up, because she was one of the only students whose parents were divorced. She often made up lies about why her father was not around.

Debra was very hard working. Not only did she have a full-time job in high school, but after getting married also she worked three jobs while her new husband went through the Police Academy. Debra attended college and expressed an interest in teaching, but she decided to work at Firestone because the pay was much better. She had three kids and continued to work full time. She still plays an active role in her children’s lives.
