Our interview was about women looking back on the times when they were younger, and even today, to reflect on how the times have changed.
When we sat down to interview Deirdre, she offered us a lot of insight into her personal life. Deirdre’s family lived in many different places so she had the experience of what it was like living in different states. Deirdre is the type of person that can make anyone laugh with her infectious smile and warm personality.
Deirdre let us into how she was able to understand her sexual orientation and be able to let others, especially her parents, know about it. She can still remember how she told her mom that she was a lesbian. She remembers it was kind of funny because after she told her mom, they were watching, of all television shows, Will and Grace. She remembers vividly that Jack’s mom was oblivious to Jack’s status and ignored it. She gave her mom brochures about it all, and when she returned to the house some months later, she described that they were in the same place not touched and even dusted around.
She gave us many laughs during the interview and as a group we were really happy that we were able to interview someone as great as she was. She hopes that things are changing for women and that we will be accepted for whom we are and what we become rather than what we do, or what society thinks is the “norm.”
As a group we think that these interviews will provide visitors to the site with insight into the past. Hopefully they will become interested in asking their parents or grandparents questions about life in a different time. It is really interesting to go back and learn about life from different viewpoints and time periods.
