Evelyn Margaret McKever was born on December 9, 1909. Her father emigrated from Ireland to the United States, and her mother was originally from England. Evelyn was born in Duluth, Minnesota, where she spent all of her childhood. She was not alone though; she grew up along with seven brother and sisters in a close and loving family. To this day, Evelyn enjoys going back to Ireland and seeing what her fathers life there was like for him. As well as an Irish background, Evelyn had a strong Catholic upbringing, attending church with her family on a regular basis. Throughout her adolescence she knew the importance of receiving an education. She looked up to people with higher education as role models, and valued what knowledge they obtained over the years. Evelyn believed that it was important to stay active in school, which is why she attended many school activities, such as dances where she hung out with her friends. Because Evelyn felt so strongly about her education, she obtained her GED, and graduated college after four years, to later become a nurse at St. Marys hospital.
