Haruko Fujiwara was born on June 15, 1974 in Fukushima Prefecture, the northern part of Japan. Although she was born in Fukushima, she moved to Tokyo when she was four and spent the rest of her childhood there. Her father’s name is Ryosuke Okumura and he was born on March 27, 1947. Her mother’s name is Keiko Okumura and she was born on June 25, 1947. Both of her parents are Japanese. Haruko has one younger brother. Growing up, Haruko spent a lot of her time playing with the other children that lived in the Danchi (apartment complexes in Japan).
Currently, Haruko is living in the United States and going to college to get her Master’s Degree in Women’s Studies. She is married, and her husband is living in Tokyo. She plans to return to Tokyo after she receives her degree.
Haruko’s story not only gives us insight into the coming of age of a woman but also of someone from a different culture. She had many interesting experiences to tell us and we think her story will be beneficial to this website.
