Jessica’s Group Reflections

This project presented many challenges, yet it was a good learning experience. In the beginning we thought we had everything ready to roll, but our first effort to interview someone for this project was disappointing; the woman we initially selected to interview turned out to be reluctant to share any stories. Luckily, our teacher set us up with a new interviewee who was more than willing to help our group out in a trying time. Jessica, our second interview subject, was so open and enthusiastic about sharing her story with us.

Today, we are often taught by our families, churches, communities, and society, that those who are different from the norm should be frowned upon and ridiculed for their personal wishes and beliefs. Prior to this interview most of our group members believed that they had never personally encountered a lesbian, and at first our interactions made us a little nervous, but Jessica opened our eyes to the fact that people who don’t fit the perfect mold of being heterosexual are no different than anyone else.

Before our group conducted this interview we all held our personal and judgmental beliefs about gay and lesbian people. In the end, the interview not only taught us to be more accepting of others, but also how to incorporate teamwork and responsibilities into a group project.
